Arachova

Arachova is a wonderful place. It's a beautiful town built on the side of a mountain.Anyone going to Delphi from Athens will come right past here. If you get the chance it's definitely worth a stop. The entire town has the feel of a classy ski resort (which it is during the winter). It feels old, but not ancient. A sturdy medieval town. Really, it doesn't get much nicer than this. Places like this are the reason why northern Greece is so much nicer than the Peloponnese.

If you know any Classical Greek you'll notice something odd about the name. In Greek it's spelt Αράχωβα. This really demonstrates the change in pronunciation from Classical to Modern Greek. To me that name should be pronounced Arakhoba but they say it more like Arahova. It's kind of interesting how the B sound became a V. I don't even know if this town had a Classical predecessor but it's an interesting linguistical factoid.

I honestly have very little to say about this place. It's charming, it's beautiful... And that's it. We didn't really do anything here apart from eat and the town has no history that I'm aware of. So just enjoy the rest of these pics. I got nothin' else to say.

The main street. It's not very big. Really it's no bigger than a one lane road. Even Greek drivers slow down when driving on it. Probably the worst thing about this town is that it has a main road running through its small streets. Worse still, it's the road to Delphi and is filled with tour buses and other big vehicles.

This is a view looking down the valley towards Delphi. These people are just blessed to have this view every day.

Another house in the hills. That'd be a hell of a place to live.

This town was called Gravia. It's after Delphi on the road north. And it is yet another stunningly beautiful town. Next time I go to Greece I'll spend more time in the Delphic area and see some of these towns. As it was we just drove past on our way to Thessaloniki.
